Early life

The son of Helen (née McLeod; 1940–2007) and Alexander “Sandy” McDonald (1937–2016), a priest and Moderator of the Church of Scotland's General Assembly, Tennant was born David John McDonald on April 18, 1971, in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland.  He was born in Ralston, Renfrewshire, the son of a village minister, and grew up there with his brothers Blair and Karen.

William and Agnes Blair, two of his maternal great-grandparents from County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912.

Also, William belonged to the Orange Lodge. Tennant's paternal grandpa Archie McLeod, a player for Derry City FC, met William and Agnes McLeod's daughter Nellie. Originally from the Isle of Mull, McLeod hailed from a long line of tenant farmers.

It wasn't until the age of three that Tennant's parents realized he wanted to be an actor and urged him to pursue a more conventional career path.

He subsequently said that pursuing an acting profession was “absurdly single-minded” for him. As a fan of Doctor Who, he was able to meet Tom Baker at a book signing event in Glasgow and chat with the actor about the show.

At Ralston Primary and Paisley Grammar Schools, he participated in several school performances as an actor.  After she watched him perform at the age of 10, actress Edith MacArthur informed his parents that she felt he would be a great theatre performer.
