Jane returned to the place where she was left and found the ransom note, after which she set up a communication line demanding $8 million. After seven months of courting, Jane succeeded in securing Eduardo's release by paying an unspecified amount of money.

Eduardo García Valseca was released on January 24, 2008, and traveled back to his family, losing at least half his body weight. According to the report prepared by Jane, they were dropped about 40 miles away and only had enough money for bus fare. Eduardo was kept locked in a wooden cage, which contained only a bucket.
A small bulb was kept lit in the box and music was played from the loudspeaker throughout the day. Three days later, when Jane paid the ransom, she saw from her kitchen window an emaciated Eduardo walking toward his ranch.
