Tyson married Kenneth Franklin on December 27, 1942, when she was 18 years old. They had a daughter two months later, in February 1943. According to the divorce decree, her husband left her after less than eighteen months of marriage. The couple's marriage was formally dissolved in 1956.

Tyson began dating Miles Davis during his divorce from dancer Frances Davis in the 1960s.

Davis used Tyson's image on his 1967 album Sorcerer. Davis had previously stated to the media that when his divorce was finally finalized in March 1968, he intended to marry boxer, Tyson. Davis, on the other hand, married singer Betty Davis that September.
