Thomas DeCarlo Burton, better known as CeeLo Green, was born on May 30, 1974, in Atlanta, Georgia. Following the death of his preacher father when CeeLo was just two, he adopted his mother's last name, Callaway.
He enrolled in Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, and got his start singing in churches there. His mother, Sheila, a firefighter, and ordained minister, was disabled in a vehicle accident when CeeLo was 16; she passed away two years later.
In 1991, he together with T-Mo, Khujo, and Big Gipp founded the band Goodie Mob and was just beginning to gain fame when Sheila passed unexpectedly.
