Jane Par Charlotte

Charlotte Gainsbourg, French actress, singer, and director, will show Jane par Charlotte, a documentary she created on her mother Jane Birkin, at this year's festival. Birkin, the 74-year-old fashion queen, singer, and actress, shows a different side of herself.

Much is unknown about the feature film, but rumours say that it looks into the passage of time and how Gainsbourg began to look at her mother in a manner she never had before — both overcoming a common feeling of the reserve. They reveal themselves to one another via the lens, making room for a mother-daughter connection.

The festival has established itself as a significant platform for European films. Like other festivals such as the Venice Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, Cannes allows a country to construct the image of its film and, more widely, to promote the idea that European film is “art” cinema. Furthermore, due to extensive media coverage, the non-public festival is attended by many celebrities and is a popular place for film producers to premiere their new films and seek to sell their creations to distributors from all over the world.
