Born on the 28th of July, 1982, in Salinas, California to parents Efrain and Isabel Velasquez, Cain was raised by his mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. As an illegal immigrant from Sonora, Mexico, Efrain had crossed the border into the United States, where he met Isabel, who was born and raised in the United States.

Kofa High School, where he went 110–10 and twice won the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship, was his high school, where he wrestled for four years.
