McGrath was one of the first human cast members on Sesame Street & appeared in the debut episode in 1969. He went on to be a regular on the show for nearly 50 years as the affable neighbor Bob Johnson, who interacted with Big Bird & the rest of the Muppet gang. McGrath was born to Flora Agnes & farmer Edmund Thomas McGrath on June 13, 1932, in Ottawa, Illinois.
He was given the name Robert Emmet, after the famous Irish rebel. He used to sing for his mom on the piano when he was a kid. His mom signed him up for the Amateur Program at the Roxy Theater, where he ended up placing second. After high school, he attended Marquette University.
Having studied music at the University of Michigan, McGrath received his diploma in 1954. While David Connell, a fraternity brother, waited tables at fraternity functions, he washed dishes, a link that Connell would later use to his advantage in the casting process for Sesame Street. In 1959, McGrath completed graduate study at New York University's Manhattan School of Music for a Master of Music degree in voice.

In 1958, McGrath wed Ann, who he had met in college. They raised a brood of five, which resulted in three grandchildren and five granddaughters. From 1958 until 2017, the pair made their home in Teaneck, New Jersey, before relocating to a ranch near Norwood.
