Why Did AMC Decide to Cancel “Better Call Saul” After Its Sixth Season?

The prequel to Breaking Bad exceeded everyone's expectations. So you can imagine our shock when Better Call Saul possibly outdid that show with something even more remarkable.

It begs the question, though, if one can have too much of a good thing. Could we risk diluting the impact of these two near-perfect series with a return to Saul's story, or perhaps another spin-off?

What Caused “Better Call Saul” to Be Cancelled?

The writers of Better Call Saul didn't actually cancel the show, but they did decide to wrap things up on a high note.

The sitcom premiered in 2015, so when it was announced in 2020 that it was receiving a sixth and final season, viewers naturally had questions.

BETTER CALL SAUL CANCELLED

Per Express, showrunner Peter Gould will say at the 2020 TCAs, “From day one of Better Call Saul, my aim was to tell the whole story of our conflicted and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill, And now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true.”

He continued, “We are so appreciative to our supporters and detractors alike for helping us along this path. We begin production on the sixth and final season next month, and we intend to successfully land on our feet.

“Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most legendary programs in television history is one of the biggest swings that AMC has ever taken,” added AMC Studios president Sarah Barnett at the time. It's been one of the most challenging things I've ever done, but because to Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, it's also been one of the most rewarding things,” she remarked.

The showrunners elaborated on their decision to cancel the series in a recent interview.

“You have to know when to ditch the get-together. Do not be the man who walks around with a lampshade on his head. … After being asked the same subject at the end of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan reportedly said, “I need to prove to myself that I'm not a one-trick pony.

It's like a situation from Seinfeld: You always want to leave them wanting more.

Gould explained that after so many seasons, it's “a lot to expect of an audience,” revealing his fear of viewer fatigue. He also doesn't want to build his entire career around the Breaking Bad canon.

I'm thrilled with the results and immensely proud of my work, but there are additional avenues I'd like to explore. “I love the actors, I love Albuquerque, I love the whole ensemble,” he said in the show's final TCA interview.

It's okay to let go and move on from time to time.

On AMC at 9 p.m. EST on Monday, August 15, 2022, the series finale of Better Call Saul will air for the first time.

Storyline and Spinoff

Rather than dispute and rescue himself, Saul opts to tell the court the truth. This admission should be sufficient to send him to prison for the rest of his life. As one might expect, this also occurs. We believe that, in the end, Saul got exactly what he deserved.

BETTER CALL SAUL CANCELLED

He has always enjoyed deceiving his customers and clients for the sake of his personal amusement and to extort absurd sums of money. We believe that his intuition kicked in later and he opted to accept responsibility for his conduct. All right, then, let us in on what the show's creators have planned.

The filmmakers also revealed that telling Jimmy McGill's life story was a lifelong ambition of theirs. Therefore, Better Call Saul did not have its run cut short. The narrative concluded precisely where it needed to be. Nothing has been confirmed, but Season 7 of Better Call Saul could be a spinoff or a follow-up limited story involving Saul.
