Sports fans are always looking for the latest opportunity to expand their interests. In fact, one of the most popular categories in the Google and Apple app stores is sports. This covers a broad range of interests, from news to fantasy leagues to simulation games.
Given the popularity of the industry, creators are always looking for new ways to engage fans with extra content. In fact, each year, there seems to be a new major project on the horizon for some of the biggest brands, leagues, and teams in global sports. So, how can you follow the action to find new opportunities?
This year, we’ve simplified the journey by listing out some of the best new sports content that’s been released in 2023 or will be released later this year. Consider it your one-stop shop for the latest in riveting sports entertainment.
‘Between the Lines’ (Video Series)
Ten years ago, Formula One racing had a dedicated but relatively small group of fans globally. Fast forward to 2023, and the racing series has seen tons of new fans join the bandwagon—and even sponsors. PokerStars, the world’s top virtual poker platform, recently teamed up with Red Bull Racing to create a highly unique video series titled ‘Between the Lines’.
These shorts are designed to bridge and explore the challenges of poker and F1 racing. While it might not seem like Texas Hold’em and F1 have much in common, the video series has uncovered quite a few unique points. In the third episode, for example, the series compares the decisions that Red Bull must make on a rainy track with poker pro Steve O’Dwyer’s long-term strategy at a poker tournament. For fans of mental sports and fast races, it’s a highly intriguing new series.
Quarterback (Documentary Series)
Clearly, sports documentaries of all shapes and sizes have taken off. While ‘Between the Lines’ touches on the hype of Drive to Survive, another Netflix project is exploring the NFL. Netflix recently released the first episodes of its new sports doc series, Quarterback. Unsurprisingly, the series delves deep into the lives and challenges of some of the NFL’s most prominent play-makers. But it does this live rather than retroactively. This first season will cover last year’s 2022 NFL season.
Everybody’s Golf VR (Video Game)
This VR project is one of the most realistic in the industry—but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The project was formerly billed as Hot Shot Golf but has since been rebranded. It allows players to explore virtual courses with highly realistic mechanics, from driving to putting. So, for golfers who spend a good amount of time at the greens, it will be a seamless extension.
However, the game also adds a quirky element. Not only are some of the courses goofier than others, but they also include interesting caddies. Best of all, there’s always a new level and challenge on the horizon, so the game doesn’t become dull—even for the pros.
Undisputed (Video Game)
In late January of 2023, eSports Boxing Club released a newly branded game titled Undisputed. This video game takes the sports simulation action where few have succeeded before: boxing. For the moment, the game remains in beta testing, which means you can gain early access via Steam. Though the game is pending official release and verdicts from critics, many have already given a huge thumbs up to the game.
It seems developers have finally nailed mechanics like ducking and weaving, which were previously deplorable. Additionally, further updates in the future will see modes like Career and Create Your Own Boxer added.
The XFL (League)
Earlier this year, the XFL successfully re-launched for a third time. In the early 2000s, the XFL flopped despite promising to give football fans a shortened and more exciting NFL format. Despite the early dissolution, Vince McMahon attempted a second relaunch—unfortunately scheduled for 2020.
However, after new ownership and a fresh wave of investment, the XFL relaunched this year. The eight-team league saw huge fan engagement nationwide, from remote viewers to live spectators. While it’s still unclear how the XFL will pan out five years from now, it’s a fantastic (and highly entertaining) option for football buffs.
