Review of the Movie Bell Bottom: Akshay Kumar's “Subversive” Work is Not an Upgrade Over His Clumsy Patriotic Fare!

We would wind up like characters in a Hangover movie if a Hindi movie educating us about the “new India” were a drinking game.

Someone who is insane enough to see a pattern in it, given how frequently it has occurred over the past seven years.

We hear yet another not nearly as subtly as the makers think of the version of the “new India” in Ranjit M. Tewari's Bell Bottom, the first high-profile Hindi film to be released following the disastrous second wave of COVID-19.

“Ab Hindustan Nahi jhukega,” the titular spy (played by none other than Akshay Kumar), concludes his briefing to his agents.

Unki haar is baar. This occurs after an opening monologue describes how Indo-Pak ties were at their finest in the early 1980s, despite the rapid rise of numerous “anti-national” organizations within India that Pakistan's ISI secretly supported.

What distinguishes it from recent releases like Bhuj: The Pride of India by Abhishek Dudhaiya?

The sly way the Akshay Kumar-starrer only hints it contrasts with how the Ajay Devgn-starrer might pound its chest about what it thinks the audience wants to hear.

The moment will make sure that many Americans in the audience are grinning gotcha.

At a time like this, one must genuinely decide which movie is the “worse”: the one that proudly displays its racism or hides it beneath the guise of “entertainment”?

Wrapping Up

I like such movies because they make you aware of what happened in the country when you were not even born.

Because it is difficult for us to read the whole history (as we do in our history class). But a visual form of telling history is the best form.

This is why I like movies based on actual instances that took place around us.
