What is in the Chicago Party Aunt
A new Netflix series will feature The Chicago Party Aunt, a crazy, booze-drinking fictitious character who first appeared on Twitter years ago.
“Chicago Party Aunt,” which premieres on Netflix on Friday, chronicles the antics of Diane Dunbrowski, the series' raucous namesake, and her nephew Rory O'Malley, who is taking a gap year before enrolling at Stanford University.
Chris Witaske, a writer and actor who grew up in St. Charles, Illinois, and worked in Chicago until relocating to Los Angeles in 2014, created the character. Witaske developed a following online after she began posting jokes on Twitter as the Chicago Party Aunt.
Witaske and company presented the project to Netflix after assembling a creative team that included numerous people with ties to Chicago.
If you grew up in the same Chicago as Diane and Daniel, “Chicago Party Aunt” could appeal to your instinctive “hey, I know that location!” reactions. If not, there are plenty of other animated show jerks out there who can offer you a cause to cheer for them, even if it's only by hinting at a twist on the most predictable gags they can make.
With the order of a 16-episode series from Chicago Party Aunt, Netflix continues to grow its animation roster. Chris Witaske (Superstore) and Katie Rich (Titmouse) feature in the half-hour adult animated comedy, which was inspired by his Twitter account. Will Gluck's Olive Bridge Entertainment and Titmouse also contribute.
A Little About the Cast
Lauren Ash and Rory O'Malley (The Book of Mormon), as well as RuPaul Charles, Jill Talley, Ike Barinholtz, Jon Barinholtz, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Rich, and Witaske, head the voice cast. The show will be split into two parts, with the first eight episodes premiering on September 17th.
Chicago Party Aunt is a comedy created by Witaske, Jon Barinholtz, and Rich that follows Diane Dunbrowski, nicknamed the Chicago Party Aunt (voiced by Ash), as she lives by her motto, “If life offers you lemons, turn them into Mike's Hard Lemonade.”
Diane Dunbrowski, Ash's character, has always been and will continue to be the life of the party, even after the party has long ago ended. Her heart of gold and willingness to assist others perfectly offset her utter lack of adulting. Diane would do anything for her city and continues to live every day like it's a 1980s Styx tour bus. A die-hard Chicago sports fan and general fan of Italian beef washed down with plenty of Malort and beer, Diane would do anything for her city and continues to live every day like it's a 1980s Styx tour bus.
Daniel O'Malley is his name. Daniel surprises his family by foregoing Stanford in order to spend a “gap year” in the city with his adored Aunt Diane, figuring out his own route and what he wants to accomplish with his life. Daniel is gay, and Diane is determined to be his working-class fairy godmother, assisting him in breaking out of his shell as he assists her in navigating the more socially complicated world around her.
