At Long Last, Horde and Alliance Players in World of Warcraft Will Be Able to Play Together

A new test build of World of Warcraft will allow players from the two World of Warcraft factions to join premade parties, according to Blizzard Entertainment. The two factions have been separated for years in order to maintain the core conflict of the franchise.

It represents a significant reformation for the game, which has historically had difficulty facilitating communication and gameplay between factions.

“The faction divide could prevent close friends from playing together, or cause players to believe that their faction provides them with significantly fewer opportunities to pursue their favorite group content,” said Game Director Ion Hazzikostas in an official blog post on Monday.

Blizzard revealed the World of Warcraft change in a lengthy blog post published this week, which included additional information. Once this feature is implemented, players will be able to team up with one another in select modes, regardless of which faction they are a member of.

A Faction-Dependent Guild System and Random Matchmaking System will come to World of Warcraft

Following the announcement of the upcoming changes on the developer's blog, players from various groups will have the ability to create premade parties for “dungeons, raids, and rated PvP.” Guilds and random matchmaking will continue to be influenced by a player's faction.

These new cooperative features will be available in the 9.2.5 version of Blizzard's public test realm, which is used to test new content before it is made available to the general public. There has been no official announcement of a release date for the 9.2.5 update.

“We're hopeful that these changes will serve to strengthen faction identity,” Hazzikostas said, adding that “by allowing more players to play the faction whose values, aesthetic, and characters they find more compelling, rather than feeling forced to choose between their personal preference and the ability to play with friends, we're hopeful that these changes will serve to strengthen faction identity.”

A Completely New Survival Game

The announcement is the latest in a string of significant announcements about Activision Blizzard, which was charged by the state of California earlier this year on allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination, and which was subsequently acquired by Microsoft for a total of $68.7 billion earlier this month in a deal that was announced in January.

On January 25, Blizzard announced a brand-new survival game, the same day that one of Activision's other studios, Raven Software, announced plans to hold a vote on whether or not to unionize its employees.

Earlier this month, Activision Blizzard announced that it had been acquired by Microsoft for $68.7 billion, continuing a flurry of major announcements for the company, which was sued by the state of California last year over allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination and later acquired by Microsoft for $68.7 billion. In a press release issued on January 25, Blizzard revealed a brand-new survival game, the same day that one of Activision's other studios, Raven Software, announced their intention to vote on unionization. As part of their campaign for better working conditions, while working on popular video games such as World of Warcraft, employees have organized walkouts and strikes.
