Army of the Dead is finally available on Netflix, and a vast ensemble cast carries the film. Seventeen years after making his feature directorial debut with Dawn of the Dead in 2004, Zack Snyder returns to the zombie genre with his latest film, his first for Netflix.
Army of the Dead began a limited theatrical run last weekend, with reviews applauding the picture's fresh take on the zombie genre. The film also became Netflix's most prominent theatrical release to date.
The plot of Army of the Dead revolves around a group of mercenaries hired to pull off a significant theft in Las Vegas, with the extra problem of navigating the city's massive zombie population. A zombie outbreak started some time ago, with the town being sealed off and the zombie population imprisoned.
A new, more intelligent race of zombies known as Alphas now rules over the abandoned metropolis, making the theft even more difficult. The film is also the start of a franchise, which will be continued in the upcoming prequel anime-style series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, in which several cast members will reprise their roles.
Another prequel, Army of Thieves, focuses on a single character and is also in the works. Here is the Army of the Dead cast, which serves as the trailer for the entire Armyverse.
Dave Bautista Plays Scott Ward
As Scott Ward, the head of the mercenary crew tasked with pulling off a daring heist in the zombie-infested metropolis, Bautista leads Army of the Dead as a pro wrestler turned actor. Bautista is best known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But he has also played formidable action movie villains such as Mr. Hinx in the Bond film Spectre, Tong Po in 2016's Kickboxer: Vengeance, and Owen Davidson in Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, as well as Blade Runner 2049, Stuber, and the upcoming remake of Dune. Bautista will also reprise his role as Scott Ward in Lost Vegas.
Ella Purnell Plays Kate Ward
Ella Purnell plays Scott Ward's idealistic daughter Kate, who joins her father's team in Las Vegas to rescue one of the refugees she's been assigned to help outside the city.
Purnell has appeared in films such as Never Let Me Go, Kick-Ass 2, Maleficent, and Churchill. She's also appeared on TV episodes, including Sweetbitter and Belgravia, and she'll play Kate in Lost Vegas.
Omari Hardwick Plays Venderohe
Omari Hardwick plays Scott Ward's buzzsaw-wielding comrade Vanderohe, who first appears in the film during the zombie outbreak and then returns to assist with the Los Vegas robbery.
Hardwick's previous roles include Sgt. Marcus Williams in Kick-Ass, Chopshop Jay in the big-screen adaptation of The A-Team, and Marquis in the 2020 horror film Spell, as well as Dark Blue and Being Mary Jane on television. Hardwick will also return as Vanderohe in Lost Vegas.
Maria Cruz is Played by Ana De La Reguera
Ward recruits another old buddy, Ana de la Reguera, played by Maria Cruz, to aid in the Vegas robbery in Army of the Dead.
Her past performances include Josefina in Hidalgo: La Historia jamas contada, as well as roles in Cop Out, Cowboys & Aliens, and the television series Power and Goliath. De la Reguera will appear as Adela in The Forever Purge and Cruz in Lost Vegas.
Nora Arnezeder Plays Lily
In Army of the Dead, Lily, played by Nora Arnezeder and dubbed “Coyote,” leads expeditions into the zombie-infested metropolis, with Ward recruiting her as the team's guide for the heist.
Arnezeder rose to notoriety in her native France for her role as Douce in the film Fauborg 36, which also garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for Azenender's rendition of “Loin de Paname.” Her other film and television credits include What the Day Owes the Night, Angelique, and Mozart in the Jungle and Zoo.
Matthias Schweighöfer Plays Ludwig Dieter
As the team's safecracker, Ludwig Dieter, Matthias Schweighöfer provides comedic relief in Army of the Dead.
Schweighöfer's film credits include Off Beat, Fata Morgana, Frau Ella, and the TV series You Are Wanted. Schweighöfer will also reprise his role as Dieter in the upcoming Army of the Dead prequel film Army of Thieves, which he co-produced and directed.
Raul Castillo Plays Mikey Guzman
Raul Castillo plays Mikey Guzman, another of Ward's recruits for the Vegas heist. Castillo has previously appeared in films such as Special Correspondents, Permission, Little Fish, and Wrath of Man and is the lead character in the superhero film El Chicano.
Castillo has also appeared in television episodes such as Looking and Seven Seconds and the Batman prequel series Gotham as Eduardo Flamingo. Castillo is also a playwright featured in plays such as A Lifetime Burning, Jesus Hopped The A-Train, and The Way West.
Samantha is Cast as Chambers
Chambers, another of the mercenaries hired for the robbery, is played by stuntwoman turned actress Samantha Win. Win, a former Canadian Wushu athlete, has performed stunts in films such as The King of Fighters, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, In Time, and Sucker Punch.
In addition to playing the Kryptonian Car-Vex in Man of Steel, Win also played the Amazon Euboea in Wonder Woman and Zack Snyder's Justice League.
