The same year she moved to New York, Franklin's father assisted in the creation of a demo that helped her land a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1960. Franklin's father also helped her daughter get settled in New York at the same time. “Today I Sing the Blues” was released as a single by Columbia Records in September 1960, and by the following year, it had reached the top ten of Billboard's Hot Rhythm & Blues Sellers chart. Franklin's first secular album, “Aretha: With The Ray Bryant Combo,” was released in January 1961, marking her professional debut.
The lead single from the album, “Won't Be Long,” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in its first week of release. However, she went on to record a number of albums for Columbia Records, none of which were commercially successful, despite her previous failure. After her contract with Columbia Records expired in November 1966, she signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records.
With the single “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” she scored her first top ten pop hit for Atlantic Records. The song peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum.
