He made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners on September 24, 2010. He later played for the Atlanta Braves from 2011 to 2014. On April 28, 2015, he appeared in his final MLB game for the Boston Red Sox.

He retired from baseball in June 2016 and began working out with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was hired as a police officer with the Port Authority in December 2016.

He died tragically on September 11, 2022, at 37. According to SI Live, Anthony was driving to work at the World Trade Center Command in honor of September 11, 2001, when he was injured in a car accident.

The Atlanta Braves, one of his former teams, expressed their sadness on their official Twitter account, writing: “We are deeply grieved by the passing of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro, 37, who played parts of six seasons in the majors, including four with Atlanta.”He voluntarily quit MLB in 2016 to work as a police officer for the Port Authority.

Varvaro was drafted in the 12th round by the Seattle Mariners in the 2005 Major League Baseball draught while attending Curtis High School in Staten Island, New York.

Varvaro played five games for the Peoria Mariners in his first professional season in 2006 and 30 games for the Class-A High Desert Mavericks in 2008, including 24 starts.

Varvaro played the first half of the 2011 season with the Gwinnett Braves of the Triple-A International League before being claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves on January 13, 2011. In July 2011, he was promoted to the big leagues.

The baseball player was traded to the Boston Red Sox on December 17, 2014, for minor leaguer Aaron Kurcz and made a few appearances out of the bullpen before being returned to Gwinnett.
