Anthony Johnson, a Former UFC Title Challenger, Died at the Age of 38!

Who was Anthony Johnson?

He was an American MMA fighter by the name of Anthony Kewoa Johnson. He was a multiple-time title challenger during his time with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and retired after one match with Bellator MMA. The welterweight and light heavyweight classes were also his territories. He was known as “Rumble” because a single punch from him could end a fight.

Prior to his retirement in April of 2017, he was the top-ranked light heavyweight contender in the official UFC rankings and the second-ranked fighter in the world according to both Sherdog and ESPN. In May of 2021, Johnson came out of retirement to score a knockout victory in his final bout.

While most of Anthony “Rumble” Johnson's fellow mixed martial artists were aware that he was ill, the nature of his condition was kept under wraps.  He passed away, and we now know the cause of his death only a few hours later.

Organ failure from non-lymphoma Hodgkin's and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare immunological condition, was the cause of Johnson's death, as reported by Kevin Iole.

UFC CEO Dana White agreed with Iole, telling him, “He was always a great kid.” He was never short on entertaining brawls, and he possessed the kind of knockout power few others have ever known. As a person, he was excellent. My heart goes out to his loved ones at this time.

When Johnson finally opened out to his supporters in September 2021, he did so to share the sad news that he was ill. His only request was for prayers. On May 17, 2022, he announced that his doctor had granted him the “bill of health.” His management had requested prayers just weeks before his untimely passing.

Johnson, though, has maintained that he has no plans to remain at 185 pounds and will move up if the opportunity presents itself. On the contrary, he plans to maintain his current weight of 170.

Johnson returned to the ring in the early months of 2011. He faced Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26, 2011. Johnson knocked out Hardy in the first round with a left head kick and went on to win the fight thanks to his superior wrestling and dominance of the clinch.

Johnson was supposed to make his main event debut against Nate Marquardt at UFC on Versus 4 on June 26, 2011; however, an injury forced him to withdraw from the fight, and Rick Story stepped in as a replacement.

Johnson then faced Charlie Brenneman in a UFC on Versus 6 bout. His first-round knockout win earned him the Knockout of the Night trophy. With the intention of challenging Vitor Belfort on January 14, 2012, at UFC 142, Johnson requested a weight class change.

Before the UFC 142 weigh-ins, Johnson's doctors advised him to halt his weight cut and rehydrate. At a hefty 198 pounds, Johnson was 11 pounds overweight for the middleweight division.

In order for the fight to go on, Johnson had to promise to give Belfort 20% of his earnings and to weigh in at no more than 205 pounds. Johnson came into the battle at a weight of 204.2 pounds, but Belfort knocked him out in the first round through submission. Following the loss, Johnson was eliminated from contention for the promotion due to his persistent underweight status.
