In 1896, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert (who remained together because they were never married) decided to adopt an orphan boy to help out around their old property of Green Gables on the outskirts of Canada.
Matthew prefers Anne Shirley, a 13-year-old original, intellectual, high-spirited, and conversational girl, when he picks up the toddler at the train employment.
