Season 2 Episode 5 of Alchemy of the Souls raises the stakes of the historical drama by focusing on the ice stone & the difficulties it presents for the main protagonists. In the last episode, we witnessed flashes of the past & how they relate to the present day in Jung Uk's life.

After Yul was hurt, So-i gave him a blood parasite. He would have been OK had he taken the medicine she sent. Unrest So-i slashes her forearm & begs him to return the parasite she removed. He tells her the parasite is draining his life energy. Yul dies when his life force runs out.
Since Jin U-tak gave So-i the parasite, she thinks it must be a Jinyowon artifact. Thus, we can erase it. Yul assumes Jin Mu gives her the pills. He urges her to hide his condition & discontinue treatment.
Cho-Yeon meets Dang-gu. She unveils the love potion charm after accepting the stones. She carried this keepsake for 3 years, knowing it would keep him from forgetting her. Park Jin tells Jin Ho-gyeong that Bu-Yeon married Jang Uk because she could sense the Ice Stone's power in him.
Jang Uk awakens near Bu-Yeon. He slept peacefully with her for the first time in years after the wraiths were defeated. She can stay in his room if she stays with her. She comforts him till he falls asleep.
Master Lee visits Jeongjingak because all wizards save Jang Uk have left. He believes Jang Uk's marriage to Bu-Yeon was predestined. In the 3 years since Yul has felt as bad as Jang Uk for running away without doing anything. Jang Uk takes full responsibility to ease his guilt.
Yul confirmed Jang Uk's fears that Jin Mu disseminated Naksu's return. Jang Uk will search for Bu-Yeon when she remembers since she provides a pleasant bed for everyone in his house. He stalks her while shopping.
He approaches her & becomes close as they travel to the palace to visit the queen. Jang Uk apologizes after accidentally ruining the queen's banquet before plotting to dry up the globe & call another Ice Stone. He begs the queen to stop abusing Bu-Yeon.
Go Won realizes he's just a pawn in Jin Mu's games & rethinks his relationship with Jang Uk, who saved his turtle. Go Won was unaware he did it for Bu-Yeon. Bu-Yeon holds his palm, infuriating him, remembering a sweet time with Jang Uk.
Jang Uk tells her he'll swap her for Naksu, making her think she's his only one. Master Yeom & Park Jin discuss the black magic artefact Master Lee found in abandoned wells. Park Jin asked Dang-gu to count dry wells.
Master Lee asks Jang Uk to monitor Jinyowon to protect the firebird. He found magical artifacts in the aquifer that resembled the fiery avian beast. Jin Ho-gyeong knows Bu-Yeon loves Jang Uk & won't return to him, so he suggests they go to Jinyowon to prove they're married.
Bu-Yeon invites Jang-Uk. Jang Uk holds Master Lee accountable. He won't join Jinyowon because he doesn't want to become involved. After Maidservant Kim tells him Bu-Yeon is sad & ashamed, he pretends to be her husband & follows her to Jinyowon.
Needing Yul's life, So-i approaches her unaware that Jin Ho-gyeong has already found her to negotiate a deal to eradicate the blood parasite in exchange for learning her biological daughter's identity. Since So-i knows the truth about Bu-Yeon, Jinyowon is a fitting prison.
Their trusted worker tells Yul that Mu-deok was Bu-Yeon & begs him to save her. Jin Mu uses Yun-help o's family links to smuggle firebird replicas into the city without Songrim's notice.
Park Jin proposes to his maidservant Kim. She agrees, delighting Dang-gu & others. Bu-Yeon & Jang Uk must stay at Jinyowon despite his protests. He asks her to unlock Jinyowon in their bedroom to do Master Lee's mission.
After learning about Jin Mu's Ice Stone plan, Go Won cancels their agreement. Jin Mu insists on telling Jang Uk how he killed Naksu using him as a weapon. Our deal holds if he doesn't meet this criterion.
Jin Ho-gyeong panics when So-i discovers Bu-Yeon is Naksu. Bu-Yeon tells Jang Uk on a walk that she used to fantasize about spending time alone at the top of a tall tree, reminding him of Naksu. She says she only thought it & doesn't have the blue jade. Jang Uk touches her hand again to see whether it feels familiar.
Alchemy of Souls part 2 episode 5 Review
Episode 5 failed to live up to my high hopes & I couldn't help but feel like something was missing from today's show. There was the touching proposal between Park Jin & Kim Do-Ju, & the part where Seo Yul learns Bu-true Yeon's identity, but I was left wanting more.
While Alchemy of Souls has rarely offered me a moment that felt like filler, I found that the episode airing today was largely comprised of such moments. But it doesn't mean we have to ignore the parts that made us gasp & cheer all over again.
But I can't help but wish that tomorrow's episode will deliver a flurry of excitement with no scene missing the show's enchantment. With the season's halfway point in sight, enthusiasm levels are undoubtedly high.
