#1- Wilton Speight
In our countdown of the four most important players for Michigan football this season, Wilton Speight comes in at number one.
When Wilton Speight threw an interception on his first pass of the 2016 season, things didn’t look so great for the first year starter. After sitting behind Iowa transfer, Jake Rudock, Harbaugh didn’t lose faith in Speight.
In 2016, Speight threw for 2,538, 18 TD’s and 7 interceptions.
This season will be a transition period for Speight and the Michigan offense. Michigan loses its top offensive weapons including Jehu Chesson, Amara Darboh and Jake Butt. Michigan will depend heavily on standout WR recruits Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black and also on running back Chris Evans.
It would have been interesting to see how Speight could’ve ended the 2016 campaign, without an injury to his collarbone.
Speight, a senior, will be relied on heavily to help the young guys learn the offense.
Look for Speight to have a great senior season eclipsing the 3,000 yard marker and the 20 TD plateau.
In conclusion, it is imperative for Speight to stay healthy, in order for Michigan to get where they wanna go. Speight must have an improved season if Michigan has plans to beat Ohio State and make it to the CFP.
Hope everyone is ready for the opener against the Florida Gators on Saturday.
